An innovative collaborative space for the prevention of stroke and dementia

Challenges and Objectives

A Living Lab is a dynamic approach to innovation, rooted in real-life environments.

This approach is based on creating spaces for dialogue and collaborative work that bring together a diverse range of stakeholders: service users, healthcare professionals, researchers, local actors, public decision-makers and businesses.

A Living Lab dedicated to brain resilience makes it possible to design, test and refine interventions aimed at preserving the brain health of a population threatened by conditions such as stroke and dementia.

The objective of the VBHI – Brain Resilience Living Lab is to test new population-based intervention approaches in Nouvelle-Aquitaine in order to prevent or delay the onset of stroke and dementia linked to cardiovascular disease, while ensuring that such initiatives do not exacerbate — and, where possible, help to reduce — the impact of social inequalities on the prevention of these conditions.

Priority Areas:

  • To test new interventions for the prevention of stroke and dementia in real-world settings, whether developed directly by Living Lab stakeholders or proposed by external partners seeking its support.
  • To mobilise and foster partnerships between stakeholders from a range of sectors (healthcare, local authorities, civil society, etc.).
  • To assess the extent to which interventions improve brain health without increasing social inequalities
  • To develop evidence-based recommendations, grounded in the results obtained, in order to inform public policy.

Did you know that, all else being equal, the lifetime risk of dementia is halved among people who have completed higher education compared with those whose level of education is below primary school certificate/lower secondary school level? A concrete example of social inequalities in health.
