Prof. Igor Sibon was appointed interim director of the VBHI by the Management Board on 17 December 2024. A neurologist specialising in the treatment of strokes, Prof. Igor Sibon will continue the work undertaken by Prof. Stéphanie Debette, the first Director of the VBHI, who took over as Director of the Institut du Cerveau in Paris on 1 January 2025.

A career focused on stroke prevention

Prof. Igor Sibon is a neurologist specialising in the treatment of strokes. He completed his entire medical training at the University of Bordeaux and a post-doctorate at McGill University in Montreal. A former president of the French Neurovascular Society, he is currently head of the neurovascular unit at Bordeaux University Hospital, whose mission is to treat stroke patients in order to reduce the after-effects and the risk of recurrence.

His research work at the Institut des Neurosciences Cognitives d’Aquitaine (INCIA) has helped to highlight the importance of cognitive and mood disorders, known as invisible disabilities, in post-stroke prognosis, and to demonstrate the influence of the structure of the brain before the stroke on the occurrence of these after-effects. Prof. Igor Sibon has also conducted numerous therapeutic trials in the field of stroke prevention.

Within the VBHI, Prof. Igor Sibon, in addition to his role as Director, is in charge of the Prevention and Care section, the aim of which is to develop new care pathways to optimise early detection of the causes and consequences of small artery disease and to propose personalised prevention strategies to anticipate the consequences of stroke.

Changes within the Executive Committee

Prof. Igor Sibon will continue to be able to count on the expertise of Prof. Stéphanie Debette, who is now Scientific Director of the VBHI, with particular responsibility for the “VBHI – Translational Omics Centre” flagship programme.

Three deputy directors will also be supporting Prof. Igor Sibon in his new role:

Finally, Prof. Vincent Dousset joins the Executive Committee as Real Estate Development Referent.
