Cohort and biobank of patients with or at risk of cerebrovascular disease who have consented to be re-contacted to take part in innovative clinical trials.

Challenges and objectives

Bordeaux’s public health community has unique expertise in the design of large population cohorts, which are key to biomedical research and the development of large-scale prevention policies.

The VBHI – BrainVasc Cohort & Biobank aims to be a next-generation hospital cohort and biobank, enabling innovative clinical studies and therapeutic trials to be rolled out seamlessly. VBHI – BrainVasc Cohort & Biobank will be linked to the hospital health data warehouse, to imaging and biological data from routine care and to the national health insurance database, and will be a key resource for research on cerebrovascular disease, in particular for testing innovative treatments that could be part of precision medicine and prevention.

Priority areas:

  • The recruitment of 10,000 patients with or at risk of cerebrovascular disease, in collaboration with various medical units (neurovascular, memory clinic, cardiology, etc.), combined with optimised phenotyping and recovery of biological samples from routine care.
  • A sub-cohort of 3,000 consenting patients with cerebral small vessel disease undergoing in-depth phenotyping (clinical, imaging and molecular) including exploration of the brain, retina and cardiovascular system.

We estimate that at least 5 million people aged 65 and over in France (and 6 million aged 45 and over) have covert cerebral small vessel disease. These people are at considerably greater risk of suffering a stroke or developing dementia. A 50% reduction in the risk in these populations would prevent 16,000 deaths a year and significantly improve the lives of millions of people living with after-effects.

How can you support the Institute?

Your help is essential in the fight against stroke and dementia, and for the promotion of healthy brain ageing.

By supporting cutting-edge research to develop new prevention strategies and personalised therapies for vascular brain diseases, you are helping reduce the burden of these diseases worldwide.

Your donation entitles you to a tax reduction.
E.g.: If I am taxable and I donate €50, my donation will only cost me €12 after tax reduction.
