Professor at the University of Bordeaux – Centre for Magnetic Resonance of Biological Systems (CRMSB – a joint research unit of the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the University of Bordeaux) – Department of Health Sciences and Technologies (STS)
After 10 years spent in industry as an Application Engineer in a multinational medical imaging company, Jean-Michel Franconi joined the University of Bordeaux in 1998 as a university professor. For his research activities, he then joined the Centre for Magnetic Resonance of Biological Systems (CRMSB), which he directed from 2002 to 2016. The CRMSB is a laboratory specialising in the development of new applications in magnetic resonance spectroscopy and imaging. Among the highlights, Jean-Michel Franconi is the inventor of an MRI physics school that has existed since 2000 and which now trains more than 500 participants from the worlds of research and radiology. In research, he is a specialist in the design of new sequences. For around fifteen years, he has focused his efforts on instrumental developments in low and very low magnetic fields. Author of more than 120 international publications, he is now more specifically involved in VBHI’s scientific focus on the democratisation of MRI.
Jean-Michel has his head in the stars almost every evening through his practice of astrophotography, which he pursues alongside walking and “taïchi” during the free hours of his gradual retirement.
