Led<\/span> by the Bordeaux <\/span>University<\/span> Hospital, the <\/span>development<\/span> programme \u201cVBHI <\/span>\u2013 <\/span>BrainVasc<\/span> Cohort<\/span> & <\/span>Biobank<\/span>\u201d, <\/span>under<\/span> the <\/span>scientific<\/span> direction of Prof Igor Sibon<\/a><\/span>, <\/span>alongside<\/span> Prof Thierry <\/span>Couffinhal<\/span><\/a> and Prof St\u00e9phanie Debette<\/a><\/span>\u2014<\/span>respectively<\/span> Scientific <\/span>Co-Director<\/span> and Head of <\/span>Omics<\/span>\u2014<\/span>began<\/span> on 6 <\/span>October<\/span> and has <\/span>already<\/span> enrolled<\/span> 100 participants. <\/span>Overview<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

What<\/span> is<\/span> BrainVasc<\/span> and <\/span>why<\/span> was<\/span> it<\/span> created<\/span>?<\/span><\/h2>\n

The \u201cVBHI \u2013 BrainVasc Cohort & Biobank\u201d<\/a><\/span> development<\/span> programme, <\/span>also<\/span> referred<\/span> to as the <\/span>BrainVasc<\/span> cohort<\/span>, the <\/span>BrainVasc<\/span> study<\/span>, or the <\/span>BrainVasc<\/span> research<\/span> project<\/span>, <\/span>aims<\/span> to <\/span>build<\/span> a <\/span>cohort<\/span> of 10,000 participants <\/span>who<\/span> will<\/span> be<\/span> followed<\/span> for <\/span>three<\/span> years<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

But <\/span>what<\/span> is<\/span> a <\/span>cohort<\/span>?<\/span><\/h3>\n

A <\/span>cohort<\/span> is<\/span> a group of <\/span>individuals<\/span> monitored<\/span> over time as part of a <\/span>research<\/span> study<\/span><\/strong>. This group <\/span>is<\/span> selected<\/span> based<\/span> on a <\/span>shared<\/span> characteristic<\/span>, <\/span>such<\/span> as an <\/span>event<\/span> occurring<\/span> within<\/span> a <\/span>defined<\/span> period<\/span> (for <\/span>example<\/span>, a <\/span>disease<\/span>), or one or more <\/span>common<\/span> features<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cohort<\/span> studies<\/span><\/strong> involve<\/span> observing<\/span> the occurrence of <\/span>health<\/span> events<\/span> within<\/span> this<\/span> population over <\/span>several<\/span> years<\/span><\/strong>. This enables <\/span>researchers<\/span> to <\/span>assess<\/span> links <\/span>between<\/span> various<\/span> factors<\/span>\u2014<\/span>demographic<\/span>, <\/span>biological<\/span>, <\/span>behavioural<\/span>, <\/span>environmental<\/span>, <\/span>genetic<\/span>, and <\/span>so<\/span> on\u2014and the <\/span>development<\/span> of <\/span>health<\/span> outcomes<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In <\/span>practical<\/span> terms<\/span>, the <\/strong><\/span>BrainVasc<\/span> study<\/span> will<\/span> help <\/span>improve<\/span> understanding<\/span> of the causes and progression of <\/span>cerebral<\/span> small<\/span> vessel<\/span> disease<\/span><\/strong>. The goal <\/span>is<\/span> to <\/span>identify<\/span> risk<\/span> factors<\/span>, <\/span>whether<\/span> biological<\/span> or <\/span>environmental<\/span>\u2014<\/span>meaning<\/span> the <\/span>individual<\/span> and <\/span>contextual<\/span> characteristics<\/span> that<\/span> increase<\/span> the <\/span>likelihood<\/span> of a stroke. This <\/span>will<\/span> support the <\/span>development<\/span> of <\/span>personalised<\/span> prevention<\/span> strategies<\/span> to <\/span>protect<\/span> brain<\/span> health<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why<\/span> is<\/span> BrainVasc<\/span> needed<\/span>?<\/span><\/h3>\n

Cerebral<\/span> small<\/span> vessel<\/span> disease<\/span> can lead to <\/strong><\/span>strokes<\/span><\/strong> and certain <\/span>forms<\/span> of <\/span>dementia<\/span><\/strong>. <\/span>These<\/span> conditions affect millions of people <\/strong><\/span>worldwide<\/span><\/strong> and are a <\/span>leading<\/span> cause of <\/span>disability<\/span><\/strong> and <\/span>loss<\/span> of <\/span>independence<\/span><\/strong>, <\/span>particularly<\/span> among<\/span> older<\/span> adults<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

To <\/span>better<\/span> understand<\/span> cerebral<\/span> small<\/span> vessel<\/span> disease<\/span> and <\/span>its<\/span> impact, <\/span>it<\/span> is<\/span> essential to <\/span>study<\/span> the <\/span>health<\/span> status<\/span> of <\/span>affected<\/span><\/strong> patients<\/strong>. This <\/span>is<\/span> the <\/span>reason<\/span> the <\/span>BrainVasc<\/span> cohort<\/span> was<\/span> created<\/span>. The programme <\/span>will<\/span> support the <\/strong><\/span>development<\/span> of one of the <\/span>largest<\/span> databases<\/span> of patients <\/span>with<\/span>, or at high <\/span>risk<\/span> of, <\/span>cerebrovascular<\/span> disease<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

What<\/span> are the <\/span>expected<\/span> benefits<\/span> of <\/span>this<\/span> study<\/span>?<\/span><\/h2>\n

At a population <\/span>level<\/span>, the <\/span>anticipated<\/span> benefits<\/span> are <\/span>wide-ranging<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
