Interview.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]\n<h2>What is your research about?<\/h2>\n<p>My research field focuses on <strong>neuroimaging<\/strong>, particularly on <strong>developing new artificial intelligence methods to support radiologists and neurologists<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In this specific study, we developed a new tool based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and artificial intelligence, called the <strong>lifespan tree of brain anatomy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This tool models the evolution of brain structures throughout life (from childhood to old age) by analysing a very large number of subjects.<\/p>\n<p>The idea is <strong>to<\/strong> <strong>understand how the brain normally changes with age, and how it changes differently in the case of neurodegenerative diseases<\/strong> (such as Alzheimer\u2019s, Parkinson\u2019s, or other forms of dementia).<\/p>\n<p>Once the average evolution for each pathology is known as a function of age, this knowledge can be represented in the form of a tree.<\/p>\n<p>A subject can then simply be projected into this space, and by looking at the nearest branches one can identify the potential diseases based on the changes observed on the MRI.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3250\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3250\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3250 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/vbhi-institute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/lifespantree-002-300x273.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vbhi-institute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/lifespantree-002-300x273.png 300w, https:\/\/vbhi-institute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/lifespantree-002-1024x933.png 1024w, https:\/\/vbhi-institute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/lifespantree-002-768x700.png 768w, https:\/\/vbhi-institute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/lifespantree-002-1536x1400.png 1536w, https:\/\/vbhi-institute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/lifespantree-002-2048x1867.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3250\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brain lifespan tree\u00a9Pierrick Coup\u00e9<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Why focus on the evolution of brain structures to diagnose neurodegenerative diseases?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Neurodegenerative diseases<\/strong> often present with <strong>overlapping symptoms<\/strong> (cognitive or motor), which makes clinical diagnosis difficult.<\/p>\n<p>Brain imaging, and particularly the <strong>evolution of brain structures<\/strong> across the lifespan, <strong>contains potentially useful information for distinguishing between these diseases<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This study introduces a method that models these anatomical changes (volumes of brain structures obtained via MRI) throughout life, to aid in the differential diagnosis of multiple pathologies at once.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, this new method models changes in the volume of 124 brain structures across the lifespan in order to obtain interpretable representations of brain anatomy during disease progression.<\/p>\n<h2>What is differential diagnosis?<\/h2>\n<p>In medicine, differential diagnosis consists in <strong>determining which specific disease explains a patient\u2019s symptoms<\/strong>, especially when several conditions appear similar. For example, certain memory problems may be linked to Alzheimer\u2019s, but also to other disorders.<\/p>\n<p>The role of differential diagnosis is <strong>to avoid confusion<\/strong> and <strong>guide patients towards the correct treatment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, it means distinguishing, for instance, between different forms of dementia or different causes of parkinsonism, to identify which disease is most likely based on brain anatomical signatures.<\/p>\n<h2>Why is this a major breakthrough?<\/h2>\n<p>At present, the vast majority of available tools only distinguish patients with a specific disease from healthy individuals (binary classification).<\/p>\n<p>Yet for clinicians, the real challenge is not to determine whether a patient is ill or not, but to identify which exact disease they have.<\/p>\n<p>This is precisely where our <strong>new tool<\/strong> offers something truly useful: it <strong>helps to differentiate between several diseases<\/strong> (multi-class classification), a field still rarely explored in research. This is why we filed a patent for our approach last February.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the model is based on the evolution of the brain over the entire lifespan, which provides a richer representation than looking at a single MRI at a given time.<\/p>\n<p>Our tool is therefore not an incomprehensible \u201cblack box\u201d: it <strong>provides clear, visual representations that are easy for doctors to interpret<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The problem of explainability is one of the main current limitations in the use of AI in medicine. This is what motivated us to choose a readily interpretable representation in the form of a lifespan tree of brain anatomy.<\/p>\n<h2>What is the next step?<\/h2>\n<p>First, we will make our <strong>tool freely available<\/strong> in the coming days on <strong>the volBrain platform<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.volbrain.net\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.volbrain.net<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>This open-access platform allows brain images to be automatically processed using all the tools developed from our research.<\/p>\n<p>Used by more than 10,000 researchers worldwide, it has already processed over 730,000 MRIs since its creation (<a href=\"http:\/\/volbrain.net\/users\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">volbrain.net\/users<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Next, we are working on combining MRI with other medical information (blood tests, cognitive assessments, genetics, etc.) to make the diagnosis even more precise.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Scientific article: Coup\u00e9, P., B.
