{"id":3077,"date":"2025-03-21T14:45:01","date_gmt":"2025-03-21T13:45:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vbhi-institute.org\/?p=3077"},"modified":"2025-03-21T16:45:07","modified_gmt":"2025-03-21T15:45:07","slug":"in-nature-communications-a-better-understanding-of-the-impact-of-brain-damage-on-the-brain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vbhi-institute.org\/en\/in-nature-communications-a-better-understanding-of-the-impact-of-brain-damage-on-the-brain\/","title":{"rendered":"In Nature Communications, a better understanding of the impact of brain damage on the brain!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\">[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221; el_class=&#8221;intro&#8221;]An international team of researchers, including <a href=\"https:\/\/vbhi-institute.org\/en\/equipe\/michel-thiebaut-de-schotten\/\">Dr Michel Thiebaut de Schotten<\/a>, our Deputy Director of Artificial Intelligence &amp; Imaging, has produced a new map of neurotransmitter circuits in the white matter of the human brain.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]\n<h2>Mapping disturbances in neurotransmitter circuits&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>The neurochemical architecture of the brain is based on neurotransmitter circuits that are essential for proper cognitive and behavioral functioning.<\/p>\n<p>In the event of a <strong>stroke<\/strong>, not only is the <strong>cerebral structure affected<\/strong>, but <strong>chemical transmission<\/strong> is <strong>also<\/strong> <strong>disrupted<\/strong>, resulting in motor and cognitive deficits. However, <strong>the precise mapping of these disturbances within neurotransmitter circuits<\/strong> remained <strong>a major challenge<\/strong> until now.<\/p>\n<p>To meet this challenge, a team of researchers has designed <strong>an innovative atlas of white matter neurotransmitter circuits<\/strong>, using :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>advanced magnetic resonance imaging<\/strong> (MRI) techniques and<\/li>\n<li>the <strong>Functionnectome method<\/strong>, discussed <a href=\"https:\/\/vbhi-institute.org\/en\/improved-functionnectome\/\">in our article here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This atlas :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>covers <strong>the axonal projections of the main neurotransmitter systems<\/strong> (dopamine, serotonin, acetylcholine and noradrenaline) and<\/li>\n<li>enables us <strong>to assess how brain damage alters synaptic transmission<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>&#8230; to envisage new prospects for targeted therapeutic approaches!<\/h2>\n<p>Through analysis of two large cohorts of stroke patients, the researchers identified <strong>eight distinct profiles of neurochemical disturbance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Unexpectedly, <strong>post-stroke cognitive deficits did not always correlate with neurotransmitter alterations<\/strong>, suggesting an underlying complexity that would require further analysis.<\/p>\n<p>However, <strong>these alterations were predictive of the efficacy of neurochemical treatments<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This research sheds <strong>new light on the neurochemical mechanisms of diaschisis<\/strong>, a phenomenon in which brain lesions affect distant regions due to the disruption of neuronal connections.<\/p>\n<p>They also pave the way for <strong>personalized therapeutic approaches<\/strong>, specifically targeting the neurochemical imbalances observed in each patient.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3078 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/vbhi-institute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/cerveaux-circuits-neurotransmetteurs.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"473\" height=\"760\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vbhi-institute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/cerveaux-circuits-neurotransmetteurs.png 473w, https:\/\/vbhi-institute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/cerveaux-circuits-neurotransmetteurs-187x300.png 187w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 473px) 100vw, 473px\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Legend: Representation of the mapping of neurotransmitter circuits in the white matter of the human brain, highlighting the differences in distribution between dopamine, serotonin, acetylcholine and norepinephrine. \u00a9Pedro Nascimento Alves<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Scientific publication<\/h2>\n<p>Alves, P.N., Nozais, V., Hansen, J.Y. et al. <strong>Neurotransmitters\u2019 white matter mapping unveils the neurochemical fingerprints of stroke<\/strong>.
